Did you know that chewing gum can help prevent tooth decay? You heard us right. Studies have shown that chewing gum for about 20 minutes after you eat can help prevent tooth decay. Why is that, you ask? Dr. German G. Jaquez and our team are happy to give you some insights to chewing gum.

The reason why chewing gum can help your teeth is that it increases the flow of saliva. The act of chewing is a great way to increase saliva flow. The flow of saliva in the mouth helps clean the mouth of food particles and debris.

In order to gain the full benefits of chewing gum, be sure to choose a sugar-free variety. Although gum with sugar will still promote saliva flow, the sugars are used by plaque to produce cavity-causing acids.

When choosing chewing gum, look for the ADA Seal to ensure that the gum is not only sugarless but sweetened with sweeteners that don’t cause cavities. The ADA Seal guarantees that the product does what it promises.

Never let chewing sugar-free gum replace oral hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. It is still imperative that you brush your teeth at least twice a day and floss at least once a day.
